A cross-grade learning group is an educational form of organization in which pupils (SuS for short) from different grades are taught together in one class or group. In the Rhineland-Palatinate school system, pupils are normally divided according to their age or year of school attendance and taught in grades (lower, middle, upper and work level). The cross-year learning groups break up this scheme and allow pupils of different age groups to be brought together. By learning and working together, this approach is often seen as a response to the diversity of individual learning needs. The idea is that pupils in a heterogeneous group can learn and benefit from each other. Inter-year learning groups can take different forms or focus on different areas (social-emotional development, augmentative and alternative communication).
