What is the UK?
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a form of communication that is used in addition to or instead of spoken language. This can be done through the body's own communication (e.g. facial expressions, gestures/gestures, posture, breathing) or through communication aids.
The communication aids are divided into
- Non-electronic communication aids (objects, photos, pictures, symbols, writing)
- Simple electronic communication aids (devices with natural speech output through recorded statements, e.g. individual talking buttons or talkers with several static symbol fields)
- Complex electronic communication aids (devices with synthetic voice output using freely selectable voices and symbol and/or written language input via touchscreen, e.g. Talker with dynamic display or iPad with Talker app)
AAC can be used by anyone, in any environment and at any time. Speaking people also use natural forms of AAC, e.g. gesticulating, pointing to an object, drawing, etc. Everyone has a need for contact and communication, which is the fundamental attitude in AAC. AAC enables users to express their wishes and needs through individualized measures, thus enabling them to participate in society and lead a more self-determined life.
Who is the UK for?
For people with congenital or acquired disabilities who are unable to express themselves using spoken language or who find it difficult to understand.
UK is important for:
- Interaction
- Participation
- Co-determination
- Language development
- Language comprehension
