Pupils and got to know food rescuers

Two upper school classes and one middle school class from the Levana School - a school with a focus on holistic and motor development in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler - visited the "Tafel Ahrweiler" food bank for "Thanksgiving". Mary Witsch, coordinator of Tafel Ahrweiler, welcomed the interested pupils to the Ahrweiler distribution point at the old train station in Ahrweiler. And she revealed which food the Tafel employees rescue: dented packages that stores can no longer sell, goods that have been sorted out and are close to their best-before date or day-old bread that is no longer sold and would be thrown away. The boys and girls listened intently to her vivid presentation. And Mary Witsch described who comes to the food bank: "They are people who have too little money and can save 10 to 20 euros with one visit. 350 to 400 people are supplied with food from the Ahrweiler and Sinzig distribution points." By visiting the food bank, teachers Gisela Schopp and Maria Cramer showed the children that many people do not have the money for a regular, good diet. "This is our topic in religious education lessons and in the Thanksgiving service," says Gisela Schopp. After all, the "Tafel Ahrweiler" is also an ecumenical project in which Caritasverband Rhein-Mosel-Ahr e.V., the Ahr-Eifel Deanery, the Protestant parish and the Diakonisches Werk are involved. The pupils thanked Mary Witsch and presented her with four jars of instant coffee for Tafel customers. How great was the joy when Mary Witsch also had a surprise in store and each child was allowed to choose a small teddy bear. It is important to pass on food instead of destroying it. The girls and boys learned this during their visit.
